| Name: | Mello (Mihael Keehl) |
|---|---|
| Location: | United States |

Mello is part of the occasionally über complex and currently über popular Death Note series! A scrawny 19-year-old, Mello shows a fondness for chocolate bars that would put even the most serious chocoholic to shame. His hair is styled in a blond pageboy cut, often giving him the apperance of a girl (much to a fan's delight), but Mello is in no ways girly. He does paint his fingernails black, but that's just because he's hardcore, dude. He wears elaborate, rather Gothic-inspired outfits, and big furry pimp coats, so he's got quite the flair of style going for him, too. Mello is often seen in the company of Matt, his erstwhile video-game playing cohort. The two of them are often paired in fanfiction, though there is no seen canon physical intimacy. Mello doesn't enter into the story until, mm, maybe halfway through? His apperance is right after the tragic death of L, the world's premiere detective and lead investigator of the Kira Case.
Buuuuuut let's take a quick trip through the Department of Backstory to begin with. First, there was a fucker named Light Yagumi, who found a Death Note that gave him the power (through the magic skillz of a shinigami named Ryuk) to kill anyone he wanted. He started playing God, killing crimminals under the name "Kira", and caught the attention of the police, who turned to the brilliant but unglimpsed detective L to help out the Free World. L was on the case, and Light was in trouble. Thus followed a great game of cat-and-mouse, with L getting closer to guessing Light's true nature, and then getting farther from the truth. By the end of the first arc, L is killed by Light's cunning and manipulation (more or less). Light subsequently takes on the name of L and continues the investigation of Kira. Enter M and N!
Mello is an orphan, real name being Mihael Keehl. He lived his days of childhood in an orphanage called "Wammy's House", owned and supported by Watari (L's compadre and somewhat of his caretaker). Of course, it's not just any orphanage--though we don't learn much about it, it's obvious that Wammy's House is a save haven and gathering place for gifted orphans. The world's greatest detective, L (aka Ryuuzaki) was also a child there, and Mello is a successor to the name and position of L. In other words, Mello is one smart sonofabitch.
But things didn't work out so well for dear Mello, because of his RIVAL. A pale, white-haired boy called Near stood in his way. The two were pretty bitter and pretty evenly matched--that is, until L died. This moment was when Mello and Near were introduced, and where Mello's explosive temperment was contrasted to the cool, even-handed Near. So while he is intelligent, Mello lets his temper get the better of him all throughout the Death Note series. He is far more off-the-handle, far more explosive, and far more prone to fits of occasionally sadistic taunting. It was thought that Near and Mello would join forces and geniuses to beat Kira, but not so.
So Mello goes his seperate way, and does his damndest to find Kira before Near does. While Near forms the SPK and tracks Kira/Light by more acceptable means (along with occasional support from the US government), Mello joins a crimminal organization/gang (widely held to be located in Los Angeles, Cali baby!), relying on information leaked by an informant in Near's SPK concerning the case. Fairly soon on into the arc, Mello gets his hands on a Death Note! He kidnaps Light's sister, Sayu Yagami, and holds her hostage for a Note of his own. The base where he stationed himself is exploded, giving Mello burns on his face and torso, a feature that he is often depicted with. The Note is eventually regained by the Japanese Investigation team, but first Mello learns some of the rules.
Mello does pass Near certain bits of information concerning what he knows about the Death Note, in exchange for the only photo of him. Mello tricks Mogi (one of the Japanese investigators) into meeting Near in New York, and in a roundabout way, Near tells Mello what Aizawa told him. Using this, Mello concludes that Light is Kira. Near also arrives at this same supposition.
Supposing the suspicion, Light orders his "girlfriend", Misa, to destroy all evidence against them and pass her ownership of her Death Note over to Teru Mikami, Light's chosen Kira replacement. Light approaches Mikami through his college girlfriend, Kiyomi Takada, Mikami's chosen spokesperson. Light eventually confesses his identity as Kira to Takada; meanwhile, Near figures out Takada's connection to the case.
Suspicious, Light designs a fake Death Note (with a few sheets of real Death Note paper) that he gives to Takada, with specific instructions. Recieving the mailed list of crimminals from Light, Takada dutifully writes them in the fake notebook, while Mikami's real notebook is kept carefully in storage. Takada's is stashed in her gym locker, giving Near and the SPK easy access to it. They obtain the fake and make off with it.
Thus follows the showdown. Light and Near decide to meet for the final confrontation; Light, confident that Near has only the fake Death Note, is full of bravado. Mello makes his reentrance to capture Takada in order to kill Kira, but is subsequently killed by Takada with a scrap of the Death Note. He apologizes to Matt in his last breaths, who was gunned down in Chapter 99. This is an interesting tidbit, since Mello is usually a ruthless and heartless character.
At the end of the story, Near admits to Light and the investigators that he and Mello could not measure up to L because they were divided. Together, they were strong, but seperate--he was too passive and rational to do much good, while Mello was easily excited and irrational. L was the supposed balance of both traits. By combining their efforts and strengths, they could have bested L, and exceeded him. This statement is proved by their seperate and joined contributions leading to the capture of Kira. Near becomes the next L following Light's (and Mello's) deaths. He is shown in the last chapter, chapter 108, giving orders as L, playing with toys (his odd trait) and eating chocolate bars (Mello's odd trait)--the perfect balance.
Mello is cold, ruthless, prone to rage and anger, often irrational, and enamored of chocolate and black nail polish. He's an interesting guy, though not someone to fuck with, as he always seems to be on the edge of things. He can be a real asshole, but he does have many dimensions and probably a soft spot. It would just take a lot to find it. But he'd probably just get sick of your shit and shoot you before you did.
Post exploding the base, Mello was en route to New York to crash Near's SPK party. Well, even semi-evil geniuses get tired, so he stopped at a hotel for the night (and to heal up those burns a little). Mello woke up in the morning, went looking for breakfast for his morning chocolate bar and coffee routine, and ended up wandering the halls of the house.
What's he got?:
- Chocolate stash (lots of chocolate bars stored in pocketspace!)
- two handgun and spare clips, some explosives, a knife
- a big faux-fur and leather coat (teh Mello pimp coat!!)
- the clothes he has on (traditional Mello blacks and leathers, etc.)
- gas mask, slightly crispy, left over from the bunker explosion
- black nail polish
- burn cream (ow)
- cell phone
- several hundred dollars for the road
